We’ve all seen the two different networks show up when we're setting up our routers. But what's the actual difference? After years of troubleshooting our own smart home connections, we’ve found that choosing the right frequency is everything.

2.4GHz: The Long Distance Runner

2.4GHz is the classic frequency. It’s slower than 5GHz, but it can reach much further and travel through walls more effectively. This is the band we almost always use for nuestra smart home devices like bulbs, plugs, and sensors, because they don’t need much speed and they’re often spread out across the house.

5GHz: The Speed Demon

5GHz is much faster, but it has a shorter range and struggles with solid walls. We use 5GHz for our TVs, laptops, and gaming consoles—anything that needs a lot of data quickly and is relatively close to the router.

Pro Tip: Many older smart devices only support 2.4GHz. If you’re struggling to connect a new smart plug, your phone might be on 5GHz. Try switching your phone to the 2.4GHz network temporarily during the setup process!
